Our deepest wish for these holidays is that we attain
what we are celebrating and the next year be new and renew our life
with an abundance of love and joy.
Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. (Mt 2,2)

And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. (Mt 2,11)

El Aventurero de Dios. San Francisco Javier. Pedro Miguel Lamet.

Today, December 3, 460 years ago that Francisco Javier died  on Sancian or Sanchón Island,  the doorstep of China. Pío XI in 1927 declared him Patron of the Missions.

Él, Pedro Miguel Lamet, me contestó.
After reading this magnificent historical novel, that recreates the life and times of a man I admire, I was so impressed that I wrote to the author to say thank you. He, Pedro Miguel Lamet, answered me.

Hoy quiero compartir ambos correos.
Today I want to share the two emails.  May they be my tribute to San Francisco Javier and all missionaries. Maybe someone feel encouraged to read about today´s honored Adventurer of God.

Cometas en el Cielo. Kite Runner. Khaled Hosseini

"It may be unfair, but what happens in a few days, sometimes even a single day, can change the course of a whole lifetime, Amir."

"I looked  at the round face in the Polaroid again, tne way the sun fell on it. My brother's face. Hassan had loved me once, loved me in a way that no one ever had or ever would again."

"I hope you will heed this: A man who has no conscience, no goodness, does not suffer."

The Psycopath Test. Jon Ronson

Ya he tardado.
I confess that I have always been a reader. My children inherited that quality; so much so that my daughter's friend would say that she had the bad habit of reading. My son was even worse. I believe that they have relaxed a bit, but not me. I continue on. And since I love technology, it was inevitable that I would end up reading the ebook. It was due.

I have had the book at home for quite some time and I have not yet begun it. The film I also had available and had not seen. That was, until the other day when Mary and I watched it together after we were talking and discovered that she also had been wanting to see it.

I understand that we have all seen and read so much about the Second World War that we are saturated by the subject. We don't want any more to do with the subject.

El Diario de la Felicidad. Nicolae Steinhardt

My friend recommended it to me and I am so appreciative because I really enjoyed reading it..

The books that my friend recommends alway have a lot of depth.

¿Crisis? no, ¡guerra!

Gianna Jessen, abortion survivor,
speaking on behalf of all victims
Humans are survivors. Not natural catastrofes, nor epidemics, nor world wars, nor arms of massive destruction...nothing can finish them off. Man is part of life by nature. Death can't even overcome us. After Christ we know that death doesn't have the final word.

Ver: October Baby
Abortion is a phenomenon that in our time has reached hair-raising dimensions. Its innocent victims are in the millions and they are so defenseless that it's almost incredible that even one could survive the agressive attack. But, they exist. Some are active and are fighting, like Gianna, whom I spoke of another entry in this blog. See: October Baby

Recently we've had an incident of another abortion survivor in Spain.

Suzanne Collins has stated that she owns much of her work in The Hunger Games to Roman gladiator sports and the genre of reality television shows, but also to the myth of Theseus.

Primavera del alma

Tol campu enllenu de verde.
Tol cielu enllenu d’azur.
Tol aire enllenu de lluz.
Tolos páxaros, de cantos.
L’espíritu enllenu d’amor.
La mia vida enllena de Ti.

Los Juegos del Hambre - The Hunger Games

"Quiero morir siendo yo mismo.

I just finished reading Suzanne Collins' first book of this best seller trilogy and now film that's a guaranteed box-office success. My wife and I decided to read it because we wanted to know what our children are reading. And I have to confess that I've become a little startled. How can 12 year old minds, the ones reading this book, digest it? The stories told take place in the USA and in the future.

We all know that the moral degradation of the Roman Empire reached such extremes that it transformed fighting to the death into a spectator sport. That spectator sport is revived in this book, but this time it's televised as a reality show with the distinctive characteristic being that the "gladiators" are adolescents and youths between the ages of 12 to 18, chosen by lottery amongst districts of people who live behind barbed wire, subjects of hunger and slavery. The fight to the death of these 24 young people is prepared and broadcast using every media technique and with a complete lack of consideration for the dignity of the persons involved or for the value of their lives.

Temple Grandin

"Diferente sí, pero no menos."
“Different, but not less.

Last night was movie-night and we watched Temple Grandin again, in the original subtitled version. So, for me, it was another English lesson.

The movie presents the true story of an amazing person. Temple Grandin didn’t speak until she was four years old, couldn’t tolerate physical contact, didn’t know how to express her emotional states, and didn’t progress in the study of certain subjects although she was very good in others. Temple Grandin was diagnosed with autism.

But her way of thinking and remembering gave her other advantages and thanks to the love, constancy and understanding of her mother, her aunt and a scienceteacher, she was able to move forward and achieve her potential. Her contributions have been improvements for all of us, especially regarding the quality of life for stockyard cattle.

Oliegos

No. Siempre.

According to the Bible, James was one of the first to be called and one of the Apostols closest to Jesus. He was at the scene of the Transfiguration at Mount Tabor, at the Prayer in the Olive Garden, in the Resurrection Appearance at the shore of the River Tiber and the Fishing Miracle. He and his brother were nicknamed by Jesus, "the Sons of Thunder."

According to tradition, after Pentacost, when the Apostles were sent out to spread the gospel, James took a ship to Hispania where he preached without much success at first, although he gained a few disciples. His preaching was much more fruitful after his dialogue with Mary, the mother of Jesus, whom he saw in Caesar Augusta (Zaragoza) at the top of a pillar.

We know that some years later, again in Jerusalem, he was decapitated at Herod Agrippa I´s, King of Judea orders, and as such became one of the first Christian martirs.

According to legend, his disciples were able to carry his body again to Hispania.

In León, at this time of Easter, a drink that is typical of the region plays an accentuated role. Limonade from the Province of León, is a sweetened wine flavored with liquored fruit. The tradition of treating the wine goes back to the Roman Age. In fact, the Romans didn’t drink wine straight, since they considered that to be a Barbaric custom, but instead sweetened it or at least watered it down.

En León, y solamente en León, “matar judíos” equivale a "tomar limonada".
In León, and only in León, “killing Jews” means the same as “drinking lemonade”.

October Baby

This time I'm not presenting a movie that I've seen, but one that I want to see, if it isn't possible in Spain, then I hope to see it this summer in the USA.

Me apresuré.

"I'm the person she aborted. I lived instead of dying. My mother was in the clinic and they scheduled the abortion for 9 in the morning.
Fortunately for me, the abortionist was not in the clinic when I was born 6 in the morning on April 6, 1977. I came early. I'm sure that if he had been there, I would not be here today, since his work is to end the life not keep it alive. There are some who say that I am a "failed abortion", the result of a botched job", Gianna stated before the US Congres when she was 19 years old.

Las Crónicas de Narnia. C. S. Lewis

The small town of Astorga where we live, began big. It was born as the capital of the Conventus Iuridicus Asturum. In its territory were the richest gold mines in antiquity. Not surprisingly, it was described by Pliny the elder as Urbs Magnífica, or the Great Urban Sphere. But, that was 2000 years ago. Since then much has happened, or as we say, it has rained a lot, although not this winter, and Astorga, with the passage of centuries, has become a lesser known place. Just as we know of places that were born as cow towns and today are capitals. This is life.

However, "what it had it has still retained", and Astorga one notes a noble air, one of culture that is important in every area; the small town of Astorga and its area of influence have given the nation important writers, artists, politicians, businessmen...

Astorga is also the capital of the diocese and has a significant presence of clergy, religious congregations and convents. This doesn't prevent the already begun Lent, the excellent time of reflection, conversion and penance, and everything high, and includes Carnaval. This Saturday, the 25th, we had here what we call Saturday of the Piñata.

Cuatro piedras, una ventana

Majestuosa sencillez
Majestic simplicity

De piedra una plegaria

sobria y gentil refleja
el alma de León.

Gloria a ti,
pueblo sin par;

In 1995 I took an intensive course to teach yoga that lasted a month. Vegeterian diet, physical exercise, meditation, etc. At the same time I also did the famous Tibetan garlic cure. After that, I have eaten meat, not a lot, but some. Anyway, from that time I was completely healthy, never had the flu, nor even a simple cold that didn't disappear by itself in less than three days. In fact, I didn't take a single pill or visit the doctor for more the ten years.

The White Pelican is native to Europe. It lives in eastern continent and western Asia and in the winter immigrates to Africa, India and Indochina. It is in danger due to the reduction of its natural habitat, negative effects of pesticides and hunting.

The American version is the Brown Pelican. I had the opportunity to photograph it in the north and the south of California. In the north we visited family in Eureka. It was a fantastic trip for many reasons. The possibility of photographing the California Brown Pelican was just the least of them.

Forks over Knives

(Antiguo Proverbio Egipcio)
One-quarter of what you eat keeps you alive.
The other three-quarters keeps your doctor alive.
(Ancient Egyptian Proverb)

During this holiday season we ate so much that we're glad it's come to an end.

Mary y yo hemos visto hoy Forks over Knives.
Mary and I watched Forks Over Knives today.

During college I was a vegetarian and it was good for me. I stopped being one for work related reasons; eating with the guys at the group-home was part of my job since it contributed to creating a normal and family-like environment.

Reyes Magos

I always told my children the truth about the Three Kings. I told them that they were wise men who were looking for God and found the Christ Child, offering him gifts. For that reason, when we celebrate Jesus’ birth we also give gifts to one another. My children participated in preparing gifts every year for the family. They lived this excitement each holiday.
