According to the Bible, James was one of the first to be called and one of the Apostols closest to Jesus. He was at the scene of the Transfiguration at Mount Tabor, at the Prayer in the Olive Garden, in the Resurrection Appearance at the shore of the River Tiber and the Fishing Miracle. He and his brother were nicknamed by Jesus, "the Sons of Thunder."

According to tradition, after Pentacost, when the Apostles were sent out to spread the gospel, James took a ship to Hispania where he preached without much success at first, although he gained a few disciples. His preaching was much more fruitful after his dialogue with Mary, the mother of Jesus, whom he saw in Caesar Augusta (Zaragoza) at the top of a pillar.

We know that some years later, again in Jerusalem, he was decapitated at Herod Agrippa I´s, King of Judea orders, and as such became one of the first Christian martirs.

According to legend, his disciples were able to carry his body again to Hispania.

According to history, around the year 813, at the time of the Astur King Alfonso II The Chaste, signs and the finding of a tomb were interpreted as the miraculous discovery of the burial place of the Apostle James. The king ordered a church to be built right there. The place soon became the pilgrimage destination for the entire Christian world; the third in importance after Rome and Jerusalem. The finding of the tomb of the Apostle made Christianization easier along the ancient travel route of pre-Christian Celtic peoples that led to the end of the earth, Finisterre.

The Apostle James thus became an inspiracion, a unifying force or Patron of the kingdom that was first called Asturorum Regnum and later the Kingdom of León.

The Kingdom of the Ásturs or of León fought Muslim dominion for more than 500 years of its existance as an independent kingdom, first for its own territory and then for all of Hispania, acquiring the legitimate Goth reign of Toledo from which a succesor then arose. That is why James is today the Patron Saint of Spain and every 25th of July the Kings of Spain attend and pay homage to St. James in the same ceremonious way that the Kings of León were established.

To make the pilgrimage to Santiago, or walk the Way, as it´s commonly called, is an experience that always leaves a mark on the pilgrim. For whatever the reasons one begins the pilgrimage, the fact is that during the Walk one is confronted with the most fundamental questions of humanity, those that refer to the meaning of life, those of spiritual content. It´s normal that the pilgrim returns to his or her place of origen, perhaps in pain, exhausted, tired... but, always with the hope and desire to do it again some day.

This has also been the experience of my Californian daughter. I went with her the first day of her pilgrimage.

Today the Camino de Santiago (The Way of St. James) is recognized by the Cultural Heritage of Humanity and as the First European Cultural Itinerary by the European Counsel.

    2. Sorry if my previous comment did not solve the problem. If you are using Internet Explorer then it is posible that you can not see the translator. But if you use Google Chrome or Safari, then you would see the floating translator box in the left-hand corner.
I don't know how this works with Fire Fox or other browsers.
      I hope this information helps.
