Esta clase de preguntas son de las que todos nos hacemos muchas veces en nuestro interior, pero que en muy pocas ocasiones exteriorizamos. Precisamente la aptitud que nos permite plantearnos estas cuestiones es la que nos hace cualitativamente diferentes de otras especies. El hombre no se diferencia de los animales porque sea capaz de aprender, los animales también aprenden. Ni porque sea inteligente y capaz de razonar, los animales también lo son en alguna medida. Ni porque tenga sentimientos, ni afectos, ni apegos, ni porque sea capaz de sufrir, ni porque sea consciente de la muerte, ni porque tenga comportamientos altruistas o los tenga crueles, los animales también tienen todo eso. No es el disponer de cultura además de instintos lo que nos hace diferentes, los animales también tienen culturas además de instintos para organizar su conducta.

These kinds of questions are the ones we often ask oursleves, but rarely ask outloud. But, it is precisely this ability that allows us to ask these questions that makes us qualitatively different from other species. Man isn't different from animals because of his capability to learn, animals can also learn. Nor is it because he is intelligent and capable of reason, so are animals. It is not because he has feelings, emotions, can develop attachments, because he is capable of suffering, or because he is aware of death. Nor is it because man can have altruistic or cruel behavior.  Animals also have all of those abilities. It's not even having different cultures besides instints that makes us different; animals also have separate cultures that determine their behavior.

El que podamos plantearnos esta clase de preguntas, a veces incómodas de hacer en público, es lo que nos hace humanos.

It is precisely the ability to ask these types of questions, that sometimes can be awkward in public, that makes us human.

Hacernos estas preguntas implica que vivimos abiertos a una dimensión trascendente, ética y estética. Una dimensión espiritual. Y esta dimensión es importante, independientemente del tipo de respuestas que uno se dé, encuentre o asuma, cuando uno se cuestiona qué es el ser humano.

Asking these questions means that we live open to another transcendent, ethical and aesthetic dimension. A spiritual dimension. And this dimension is important, regardless of the answers one gives, finds or assumes, when one is considering the question of what it means to be human.
