Mitos y Leyendas. Los Juegos del Hambre

Suzanne Collins ha declarado que su obra Los Juegos del Hambre le debe mucho al circo romano de gladiadores y al género televisivo del reality show, pero también al mito de Teseo.
Suzanne Collins has stated that she owns much of her work in The Hunger Games to Roman gladiator sports and the genre of reality television shows, but also to the myth of Theseus.

Cuenta la mitología que, en pago por su derrota en la guerra y para evitar su destrucción, Atenas debía enviar 14 tributos, siete muchachos y siete muchachas, a Creta, donde serían arrojados en el laberinto y devorados por el Minotauro. En la tercera ocasión en que Atenas se disponía a enviar su tributo a la arena del laberinto del Minotauro, Teseo, el hijo del rey, se ofreció voluntario. Teseo venció al monstruo con una espada mágica y salvó a sus compañeros y a su país de tributo tan afrentoso.
Mythology tells that, in return for her defeat in war and to avoid her destruction, Athena had to send 14 tributes, seven boys and seven girls, to Crete, where they would be thrown into the labyrinth and devoured by the Minotaur. On the third occasion that Athena was preparing to send her tribute to the Minotaur's labyrinth, Theseus, the king's son, offered himself as a volunteer. Theseus overcame the Minotaur with a magic sword and saved his companions and his country from such an outrageous tribute.

Este tema se repite como leyenda en la historia del Reino de León. Esta vez eran 100 doncellas el tributo que debía entregarse al rey moro para su harem. Y dice la leyenda que el Apóstol Santiago se presentó en una batalla, montando un caballo blanco empuñando una espada, liderando el combate y liberando al Reino de tributo tan afrentoso.
This theme is repeated in legend form in the Kingdom of León. This time the tribute was a hundred young women that had to be handed over to the Moorish king for his harem. The legend tells that the Apostle James presents himself in battle, mounted on a white horse, fist around a sword and heads up the battle freeing the Kingdom from such an outrageous tribute.

En Castilla también tenían una leyenda semejante. Allí era San Millán el que se apareció matando moros.
In the Kingdom of Castilla there was also a similar legend. There it was Saint Millán who appeared killing the Moors.

Los Juegos del Hambre enlazan así con la más antigua tradición mitológica. Aunque con la particularidad de que aquí los personajes no son de filiación divina, ni siquiera santos. Son personas que se presentan como cercanas, como nosotros mismos, en un mundo presentado como verosímil en un futuro posible. 
The Hunger Games are linked, thus, to the most ancient mythological traditions, although the distinctive characters are not of divine affiliation nor are they saints.  They are characters that are presented to us as those close to us, just like ourselves, in a credible world at a possible future time. 

Suzanne Collins ha escrito una distopía con mucho potencial para reflexionar acerca del mundo actual y el que estamos construyendo, quizá sin darnos cuenta.
Suzanne Collins has written a dystopia with a lot of potential to reflect on our present world and the one we are building, perhaps without noticing.
